Child Dies from Malaria Every Two Minutes: How Can We Sleep at Night?

Our nightly routines are often filled with efforts to ensure the perfect sleep - high-end mattresses for comfort, blackout curtains to keep out the city's glow, white noise machines to drown out the world outside. We invest so much in these luxuries while something as simple and affordable as a $2 mosquito net - a lifesaving shield during sleep - could mean the difference between life and death for a child vulnerable to malaria. Every two minutes, a child loses their life to this preventable disease. It's a stark reality that forces us to question: How can we sleep well when such a profound tragedy is unfolding? As the artist behind b_side Plates, these glaring contrasts drive me to take action.

Facing the Reality of Global Health Inequality- 50% of the world's healthcare facilities lack basic hygiene services

According to a report by the World Health Organization, 50% of the world's healthcare facilities lack basic hygiene services like soap, clean water, and hand sanitizers. “If health care providers don’t have access to a hygiene service, patients don’t have a health care facility,” said Kelly Ann Naylor, UNICEF Director of WASH and Climate, Environment, Energy, and Disaster Risk Reduction (CEED). “Hospitals and clinics without safe water and basic hygiene and sanitation services are a potential death trap for pregnant mothers, newborns, and children. Every year, around 670 000 newborns lose their lives to sepsis. This is a travesty – even more so as their deaths are preventable.”

Serving Change: The Mission of b_side

Every b_side plate sold is not just an exchange of goods, but a commitment to a cause. In general, I donate profits from b_side Plates to various organizations making a difference in the world.

But for each plate inscribed with the sobering reminder - "every 2 minutes a child dies from malaria" - a specific share of the profit goes directly to the Against Malaria Foundation Recognized as one of the most effective organizations combating malaria, our collective contributions can help the AMF protect more lives.

The Power of Nets

The solution to this global health crisis may be simpler than you imagine. A single net, costing just US$2.00, is the most effective prevention against malaria. It's a small price to pay for a tool that can mean the difference between life and death for those most vulnerable.

When you support the Against Malaria Foundation know that 100% of the funds go directly towards buying these life-saving nets.

Every night, as we retire to our beds, we can sleep a little easier, knowing we've made a choice that contributes to changing the world.
